Bulldogs 38 - 24 Lockside

After having a swift half with Rupert and John at The Swan last Sat we then drove to Marble Hill Park to be met in the car park by a rather large and grissly bunch of Lockside players....our oposition who a few weeks earlier had beaten us!

This Sat .changing room chat was different. We all knew we had some of the big guns away....both from the forwards and the outsides. And our game plan was changed accordingly.

With both Roger and Will available and with such good boots it was prudent to put Roger at no 10 and ask Will to play at 15. With this combination the ploy was to keep drivimg Lockside back with long high kicks and for us to follow up and
pounce on their mistakes and bad handling.

This game plan and selection that I had discussed with Tony prior to the game paid off handsomely and was the very basis of our try scoring movements.

We lose the toss and received the ball and back to Roger and up in the to test out the oppo. Worked well and it was obvious that this was the way to go. Within the first 10 mins Michael Bianchi, Iron Man 2 managed to scrap for a ball in the loose and then went off on one of his well known runs and with both pace and guile he
jiggetered through and outran the opposition to score our first try under the posts. Roger converted and it was game on!

Our team was a good workman like side....we had a good solid front row of John, Tom and Rupert, a second row with the big man Steve going down with Lord Lenthall and in the back row we had Dave U and Chris. Ben at no 9 and Roger at No 10, with Kevin and Matt at centres with Michael Bianchi, Iron Man 2 on one wing with and Nobby on the other with Will at 15. A good solid side.

Lineout was good with Tom finding Steve every time and in the set piece we had a field day and only lost one against the head but also won two.

The back row and was awesome and Dave, Chris and also Tom were causing havoc with all the high kicks that were being put up.

Dave U picked up another bad ball by Lockside and went charging off for a try, Ben later took a few quick balls and went over for a couple of tries, Roger did hs usual weaving, chip ahead and over for a try and the most intersting one was when five of our players followed the ball carrier and when they were 10 metres out starting passing it backwards and forward in front of the try line! Finally I think it was Tom who put the ball down!!

A really good game with the final score of 38 points to us against 24 to Lockside . A very worthy win and an object exercise in following up the ball and using high
kicks.

One of the highlights of the game was when Lord Lenthall saved a cert try under the posts. He was totally isolated and two players coming straight at him. The ball carrier must have been put off by my amount of padding, crash helmet and various other gear and for some reason he tried to pass the ball. I intercepted this with one hand and then support arrived and ball cleared!!

The whole team was amazed!!
